In an island of properly working infrastructure, surrounded by messes.

Also, Entry #1,700.

On Friday afternoon I'd been invited at the last minute by Kevin L. to celebrate a mutual college friend's birthday and return to DC after a few years spent in Texas. While there, drinking lovely bourbon and meeting new folks, a crazy storm blew straight through (caused by the heat) and made a mess. I'd been texting with Dave about meeting he and Leet at Cobalt, but their cab had to turn back before even getting to the city; upon further contact with people these were becoming common stories. I later managed to walk home with a huge umbrella and a break in the weather, and we slept fine.

Unfortunately tons of people have been without power all weekend, a very bad weekend for this as the high temps have been about 100 and overnight it's still about 80. There are some trees down, too, though they are being steadily cleaned up. Also, Sprint and Verizon are having cell signal problems in the area. My phone is perfectly fine while here at home but tomorrow I have to go to both Virginia (for work) and Maryland (for an errand) tomorrow so we'll see if that remains the case all day. And the building across the street from work has power (hope you're all good over there, ashfault76), so I'm assuming ours does as well, at least for now.

I'm hopeful that everything will be back to normal soon, and in the meantime I'm annoyed at people using this as an opportunity to tout their stupid political causes. Coal advocates saying "this is what life would be like without coal": 1) we're too hooked to leave coal power until we find better energy sources anyway, and 2) fuck you.

On a happier note, this is my 1,700th LJ entry. I'm feeling more like updating here frequently, so perhaps I can get to 1,800 fairly quickly.

You've given me inspiration, though I still can't approach the posting frequency you've achieved.
