And I was thus inspired to have a Maggie Gyllenhaal movie spree.

Stranger Than Fiction: The omniscient narrator come to life made this a fun movie, but it still felt like I was struggling to care whether Will Ferrell's character really deserved to figure out who was behind the voice he heard constantly. Even his devotion to Maggie Gyllenhaal's left-wing bakeshop owner didn't really get me on his side. It was only Emma Thompson that I wanted to see more of, hear more of, and so on. And like The Dark Knight, I could easily tell they filmed this in Chicago. Which is neither a good or bad thing, just sayin'. B.

Secretary: This one had been in my queue for a long time, probably stemming back to the days when I was an actual secretary. Anyhow, good ol' Mags (well, she was actually super young at the time) made this happen with a character complex enough to straddle the very different roles in the main character's life. While that story was very full, as was that of the lawyer she worked for, her family was portrayed a bit flat. Like, I know they were a dysfunctional bunch that she was determined to rise above, but I wanted to know why they did what they did, especially her mother. Also, I liked the set design, especially the crazy lawyer's crazy office. And I do have to say that the ending felt like it was hijacked from a different movie and tacked on to this one. B+.

yes...netflix going up by a buck is maddening...since all they did was throw an online-only plan. which...is still not worth it since nothing good i want to see is ever streaming.
