On top of regular life.

A week ago today I took my MacBook Pro to the Apple Store to figure out why my DVD drive wasn't working. The Genius that got stuck the privilege of working with me offered to replace it, in 1-3 days and I let that happen. Fast forward to Saturday, when I get a call saying that hard drive failures are also a concern that may have contributed to the non-working drive. I believed them because I'd had issues with the machine freezing up for a while* but worked around them because I didn't want to part with it. So I checked that everything I needed** was backed up online, and then gave them the go-ahead to replace that too. They turned that around in record time, literally in the time it took me to go to Tysons, see Inception, and come back. I picked it up Sunday afternoon (with a bill of $0, yay AppleCare) and have been futzing to get everything back on it since.

First, Mozy is a great backup service and I recommend them if you're looking for one (no, they didn't pay me or ask me to write this). I've requested multiple batches of my files from them and gotten them delivered via their website really quickly. However, the main issue is figuring out where everything was saved and whether there is a better arrangement for it this time. I've got all my photos and documents back (but no MS Office yet, blarg), and am working on music files now.

Second, it just takes a long time to get back to the previous specs on a computer I'd been using every single day for ten months. I've got Skitch, last.fm, and Adium back up and operating, but haven't finished downloading or organizing my files, so there's still a bit of chaos every time I open this thing. I had planned to take it with me to work and futz with it on my lunch break, but figured it wasn't worth lugging it through Metro and everything; plus, I'm kinda busy there. I also had to let Michigan Boss know that I'd be a bit slower in responding to things because ... I don't know where the hell my documents for that job are at the moment. I'm reconstructing some from my sent mail.

Soon this will be over. First world problems are not all that bad.

* Since November. Don't judge. Also, three months is far too young for a MBP to begin experiencing hard drive issues but I digress.
** As it turns out, I was a bit premature in stating I had everything I needed. All of my calendar entries are gone. :( Not a huge loss, all things considered, but I am going to have to reconstruct some important fall semester dates from emails and memory, and also start over on keeping track of my hours this pay period for Michigan Boss. Plus I just hate losing life metadata like that.

Yay, AppleCare and yay, Mozy. I'm big fans of both, both of which have saved my ass at least once in the past few years. Good times.

And I think I'm going to get further entwined with Apple soon, because I'm 89% sure I'm getting an iPhone.
