Happy birthday, LJ.

Though you are actually less mature than the average 8-year old.

Eight years ago today, no longer able to spare the time to write a longhand journal but still stubbornly devoted to keeping one, I posted a request on a Princeton Review college admissions message board for an invite code to Livejournal.com, and I haven't shut up since. I haven't changed my journal style in about six years, and have only changed my mood icon set once. I am, though, working on updating my user icons since I'm allowed to have so many now (when I started, I could only have four!).

I'm a bit surprised that I'm still using it, actually. As a college freshman, I wouldn't have guessed that I'd still be blogging here eight years later. But the community is a nice change from the isolation of writing on loose leaf paper (or even typing in Microsoft Word), and for all the changes in LJ's staff and ownership (we've gone from Brad and his friends in San Francisco to a bunch of Russians with a rabble-rousing advisory board) it still works well. The community has definitely evolved, and I miss lots of folks that haven't been seen on here in months or years, but new folks are still taking their place, and most of us aren't even fanfic-obsessed nerds living in our parents' basement. :] I've even met three (maybe more?) of you in person that I wouldn't have known without LJ, and will continue to do that when possible.

My entries have ranged from fairly good to quite bad, and from widely read to completely ignored, but I'm still in love with doing them here, and my writing skills have unquestionably improved from blogging. I use this blog as a to-do list, photo dump, and event organizer in addition to chronicling life, so for the moment I don't plan to stop using LJ. Even if I do, I'm definitely exporting all of my entries and taking them with me to a new platform.

For those of you newer readers that might be curious, you can see a lot of older entries through the tags page. I've actually tagged less than half of my total entries, but I'm working through them slowly. So. Happy birthday, blog. You don't look a day over six.

Happy LJ-versary to you! Mine is turning 7 next month. They've got to be even older in internet years.

Thanks! I think you are one of the folks I've had on here the longest that still updates, so ... well done.

And the feeling is mutual! I've stolen a few LJ friends from your list in the last couple of years, in addition to enjoying your entries.

Oh congratulations!

I got my start on uJournal back in 2002 and eventually migrated to LJ in 2004. I was able to snag those old uJournal posts during its brief resurrection a few years ago, and I'm so glad I did.

So glad to have "met" you, and also glad you're still around on LJ. My friends list has changed exponentially over the years, but I'm not going anywhere either...I guess I'm just not the type to abandon ship. :-)

Hooray for meeting! And stay tuned, because I may end up in your neck of the woods sometime in 2010. :]
