Giving myself a pep talk about it.

Today has been a wash. After having a good time out with Sarah and her friends last night, I originally woke up at 10:30 this morning, then fell asleep again and woke up to our subletter coming in the house to retrieve the rest of his stuff. Not how I'd wanted that encounter to go, because I was asleep on my frame-less mattress on the exact spot on the floor where his stuff had been before I moved it. I groggily pointed out his stuff, and he and someone else that I never saw moved it out quickly and they were gone. The router also belonged to him, so I had to dig out my own and spend 20 minutes futzing with it to get internets back, but I did and now have wireless in the house, at least.

Following that I had lunch and then made a test walk up to my program's building. It takes about 50 minutes, which is not a feasible regular thing, but it's good to know I can do it if necessary. On most days I will take the bus, which is less than 15 minutes door-to-door. I also talked to Momma to update her on my move-in progress as I walked. I then spent a couple of hours on North Campus wasting time and then printing a form for the Registrar to sign on Monday. These computer labs are nutty; as soon as I hit print, the two flat screen TVs mounted on the wall came out of screensaver mode to show that I had just been added to the visual printjob queue. I felt famous. Well, actually a little creeped out.

Trying to figure out which bus stop would bring me back here didn't go so well, though. I waited at one for about 10 minutes, only to see the bus appear at the other one and drive off, so I moved over to that one, ready to sprint back to my original point if necessary, but I finally got a bus. I then made my way back here, succumbed to a craving for greasy Chinese food, and went off to find some thanks to Yelp. I of course got lost looking for it, but found it and ordered. While taking my kung pao chicken back home I recalled that OJ desperately needed gas so stopped somewhere and could not get my debit card to work. Second time this has happened in the last few days. I was so over it that i just skipped that errand and came back here to eat, feeling useless and adrift.

Nothing monumentally bad, of course, but most of that felt like a misfire. I've since pep talked myself as follows: You know 2 people in this town. Your program hasn't started yet, thus you are not yet meeting large numbers of others, but that will follow. You have been here for 72 hours and this is just how life will be in this period. Get over it. Also, assemble your furniture.

And now I'm actually going to begin assembling my furniture. Remember what the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have to say about this:

Shake it like a ladder to the sun
Makes me feel like a madman on the run
Find me, never, never far gone
So get your leather, leather, leather on, on, on, on

Your zero
What's your name?
No one's going to ask you
Better find out where they want you to go

Try and hit the spot
Get to know it in the dark
Get to know it whether you're
Crying, crying, crying, oh, oh
Can you climb, climb, climb
