John Legend can pick the soundtrack.

Friday at work felt like constant misfiring for a few reasons. First I was getting intermittent calls and emails (only addressed to me) from one of the Finance people asking questions, and learned while trying to find answers from local coworkers that she also reaches out to them individually about the same things. Is she shopping for the answer that best suits her? No idea, but it's super inefficient. Also I found out just before she was doing it that Key Suburbs Coworker* was out at 2:00 pm but since she didn't announce that in advance and I'd been saving all the items for her until later in the day. Also my boss came to me at 3:00-something with a list of things he wanted me to research and "get back to me, I'll be here until 6:30 at least." Then I ran into him leaving at 5:57 when I was returning from the whiz palace. Oh well; I found the answers he needs and will bring them to him on Monday.

From there I went to the gym and then met Blake for dinner at Duplex after that. He was sitting at the bar with Patrick, Kevin, and Doug so we all chatted. Then later Joe and Adam came in with friends so I also chatted with them over drinks and finally Sara called Last Call pretty early so I sat there and gabbed while she closed up the bar. A good antidote to the workday prior!

Earlier on Friday Andrew had mentioned that Travis would be coming into town for the weekend from Blacksburg again, so we made quite a few impromptu plans! Josh researched hikes and on Saturday morning Andrew & I went to their house while Josh and Chris bought snacks, then Travis traded sweaters and we drove all the way to Poolesville to the trailhead. I unfortunately was quite nauseous during the ride up as has been such a long time since I've been an auto passenger for a long distance** and basically had to put my face in my sweater to keep the dizziness at bay. But I very much felt better as soon as I was out of the car! And the hike turned out to be 14.4 miles, which was a more intense distance than we were planning for but also completely flat so still doable. While hiking I was able to have meaty conversations with everyone and it felt very therapeutic to be outside for half a day with no real rush or agenda. We also took a few photos at the aqueduct that was at our halfway point. Then for the long drive back we went through Potomac to gawk at the horrific McMansions, then home where B had made pork katsudon.

Today we reunited for brunch in Old Town, and the Metro was very much not cooperating so I waited about 25 minutes for the train over. Still made it on time, though! Hooray for planning ahead. I had actually budgeted time to get coffee at the new place by us, so after seeing the expected wait times I simply took it with me on the train and all was fine, plus I gave directions to lots of tourists. Brunch was lovely, too! There were never gaps in the conversation or the mimosas, and Jackson 20 can now be added to my list of places that get both hollandaise and crispy bacon exactly right (don't tell my doctor I'm making a list). Then I parted ways with the group which was doing an Escape the Room thing*** and returned to DC. Only had to wait 10 minutes for the train back!

Tonight Mario is over and we have the Grammys on. They're overall pretty unfortunate, the Bowie and Prince tributes and Beyonce's performance aside. It is a bit of shame because there is a whole bunch of great musical talent there and being celebrated, but various presenters, awardees, and performers are acting bizarre and generally foolish and that will dominate the headlines. Meh.

*She is on a support team but is almost exclusively devoted to our team because our portfolio got so large. And she's great! I just didn't know she was leaving early and I try to announce our absences to her just to keep things running efficiently.

**I am very much not a fan of cars and driving so overall I consider this a plus and it's part of the reason I live in DC. And the last time I remember being stricken with carsickness was 2010.

***I do not understand the appeal of paying money to be locked in a room. I truly don't.

what?! escape rooms are the best! the puzzles, the heart-clenching excitement as the your time quickly runs out and you still haven't gotten the key! it's better than sex (well, if you're not having sex, anything is better than sex).

Admittedly it was difficult for me to turn down. I've been following the Grace and Frankie S1 mantra to say yes to everything and it usually serves me well. But having heard the cost it did not seem worthwhile to me.
