Or, The Strangest Thing My Alma Mater Ever Did.

Heard in the news today that Aubrey McClendon, who used to be a mega-darling in the oil and gas world, died yesterday. And while I had no knowledge of the circumstances surrounding his legal troubles, that's what everyone is keen to talk about.

I, on the other hand, remember most that he and his wife were big donors to Duke while I was there. And somewhat bizarrely, the university decided to surprise them by unveiling gargoyles modeled after the McClendons over the entrance to the dorm named for them. It did not go well.

I still have photos of the "gargoyle" heads post-installation and pre-removal somewhere, possibly at my parents' house. I should dig them up.

(You surely will not be surprised that I have virtually nothing in common with most other Duke alumni.)

They looked seriously awkward (think bobbleheads) when perched on the building. I'm really annoyed I can't pull up my photos of them right now.

Did you know I went to Duke? I think I've mentioned it in my LJ, but that was a long time ago and I don't make a point of telling people. I showed up there in 1985, an A.B. Duke Scholar. I wasn't happy there and left halfway through my undergrad. In retrospect I didn't know what the fuck I was doing when I was picking a college. But I also wasn't out of the closet yet, so I had a lot to figure out about myself before college/career planning would make any sense.

I did know that! It's a strange place to be out for sure, then and now.
