Personalities take three months to reveal themselves.

Half the time if the groundhog sees his shadow.

I did manage to drag myself to the gym on Monday, as Presidents' Day holiday plus driving B to actually work made me feel lazy and like I should do something productive. So I did and it was quite empty, partially due to impending weather. Today we had a three-hour* delay due to the remaining ice on sidewalks and roads at work, so my day got pushed late and I didn't leave my desk until 7:15. But I still wanted to go work out to counteract the hours of sitting and squinting at my screen. So I did.

I had an uneventful (and not very engaging but meh) workout on the elliptical and then went to sit in the sauna. Upon arrival one of the regulars** in there was having a long conversation with an older guy about Mexico. I understood only some of it because they were speaking in Spanish, but what I caught included musings about Sean Penn giving up Chapo's hideaway and whether their government is more fair than the US'. Finally, The Regular left temporarily to chug Pedialyte and the older guy immediately turned to me. The personalities at LgAy Fitness have slowly been revealing themselves to me, and I figured this meant it was about to continue. He started by asking how much of the Spanish conversation I understood ("about 30%") then moved on to comparing liberal arts colleges and large universities, then asked where I went to college, then moved on to where he went to college, and med school, and where he had done fellowships, then asked about my graduate degree and on and on. In the course of 13 minutes***, he continued on lonnnnng but kind of interesting tangents about higher education, how East Coasters and Midwesterners do or don't differ in their approach to academia, etc. Entertaining as it was, though, I was mentally musing about how his default setting was to talk non-stop, whereas mine is precisely the opposite.

It's the personality type that I can handle in limited circumstances, but that would be a huge liability in a coworker, friend, or partner. I definitely wouldn't date or hang out with anyone that approached social situations like this, and I have been lucky not to work with anyone that approaches work in this way. So I suppose a limited exposure to Talky McTalkerson wasn't a bad thing.

* Which I happily took advantage of, but it pretty much kills any possible productivity. I had lots of meetings and very little time to actually work. End digression.

** I need a name for this guy, since he has been in the sauna literally almost every time I'm there over the last three months. I'd be concerned he'd sweat himself to death but he always has water or Pedialyte with him.

*** There is a clock right outside the sauna. I usually sit in there for 15 minutes, not for any better reason than it's good (usually quiet) decompression time.

We have the conspiracy theorist that ambushes me in the locker room sometimes, telling me about how Hillary has had people killed and other things like that. If there are other people in there when I'm changing it's safe, but if it's just him I get the lectures...

Ew. I'd stand my ground if it got to that point.

That's always odd to me, too, when people talk nonstop. I can't relax around someone like that. Conversations seem to require me to be too engaged for that.

I also spend a good amount of my workday talking, so I'd really rather have silence at the gym. :/
