My father has the worst taste in Christmas decorations.

And I couldn't even bring myself to photograph the tree in the yard.

My father has an interesting life, fueled by a curious mind and extensive means to get what he thinks up. He started his career as an auto mechanic, and after 13 years of that had become thoroughly bored and started his own business building furniture. That included kitchen cabinets, beds and lamps made from aspen logs, and various custom pieces once he became known for it. The logs were harvested locally, as he frequently uses whatever is readily available to create things. Once upon a time, he also made custom tin lampshades for the lamps, but hasn't done much metal work in the recent past.

By the time I was in elementary school in the early 90s, he had added collecting and selling antiques to the mix, which meant I frequently ended up at flea markets and yard sales while he sifted through what appeared to me to be crap. For a good long time he had his own antique shop, but detested having to stay there all day (or pay someone else to do so) tending to customers. So since the mid-2000s or so, he's been a member of an antique co-op, and only has to be present to man the register for three shifts a week.

What does this mean for Christmas? My father insisted on a non-traditional Christmas tree, and a real one that he plucked off of someone's property (with permission). So I arrived home last Monday to this:

It was best described as 1/3 Charlie Brown, 1/3 Wild West, and 1/3 The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Unfortunately, after a week off in DC and a week off tending to the fireplace while admiring that tree, tomorrow I return to work. I should attempt to sleep first.
