In which our hero develops searing sinus pain.

And curses everything in sight. Which isn't very heroic.

I dutifully got my flu shot last fall, made easier by the fact that Beaming House HQ trucked in a nurse and a tub of the vaccine such that we could get one without having to leave the building or exchange any insurance information. I also have been washing my hands religiously, not touching doorknobs on the way out of bathrooms, and avoiding sick coworkers. For their part, said sick colleagues have done a pretty good job of actually staying home when ill.

Nevertheless, it didn't work. On Monday afternoon I started to feel really warm while sitting in my last two meetings, and had a headache going despite being well-rested, hydrated, and caffeinated*. I woke up Tuesday basically feeling like death, so I had my check-in call with Boss Lady from home and then went back to bed. I'd hoped it would be mild but I actually felt worse on Wednesday, with a great deal of sinus pain that led me to wish greater and stabbier pain upon whomever made me contract this. Honestly, I don't even know if it's a contagious thing but I can't say for sure.

Anyhow, I had strange fever- and Mucinex-induced dreams overnight, then woke up and went to work solely to pick up my laptop charger and come back home. I participated in one more call, then slept more, and have since felt okay enough to knock out a chunk of the work I missed, punctuated by driving Brian to work and dropping off a stack of bills at the post office. But I haaaaaate feeling like I basically missed three days of life, including workouts. On the plus side, I also missed three days of spending money (aside from the aforementioned Mucinex), so there is that minor bonus. Hoping for a healthy weekend.

* Call it a blessing and a curse, but I rarely have headaches so if I get one without an obvious cause I know some ailment is coming.

I used to get the flu almost every year until I got my first flu shot about 8 years ago. Haven't had the flu since. So I'm sold on getting it every year now, but they say this year's shot is only 25-30% effective against this year's flu strain. Not great, but they say getting it can help get you over it sooner with possibly less severe symptoms, so I'm still glad I got it, but still being careful too.

Perhaps it was less severe than it would've been otherwise. Who knows? Just glad it's over now.

I've heard, en mass, this year that the flu shot didn't work for many people. Or rather, more people are just getting the flu despite getting the shot. :/ I've not gotten the shot and feel like I'm tempting fate. If people who've gotten the shot still got the flu, what hope do I have?

Hopefully you kicked it quickly after this and it didn't plague you for too long.

It was about 72 hours of misery, but after that I did heal up just fine! I have no clue if it was less severe because I had the shot done (which I've also been reading/hearing). At the least the shot was free so I don't have to go demand a refund. :)
