People aren't on my good side right now.

Especially those with no concept of personal space or quiet.

My trip to the gym today was earlier than usual, about 7:30 p.m. instead of the regular 9:00. Didn't think it would make that much of a difference, but it was full of folks, and not very polite ones either. When I first passed by the weight rooms, they were chock full, so I went upstairs to the track and did my stretching on one of the hard-to-find mats up there, then came back down. Within 15 minutes, as I was sitting on a bench preparing to lift weights, a Gym Queen plants herself on the other end of the bench and without a word starts her own routine. Since when do we share weight benches?? She could have at least asked, or said "That's my bench" and I would have given it up to her even if I didn't believe that it was. I actually needed the entire bench in order to do triceps, so I awkwardly left and did stuff on other machines. I'm going back to 9:00 or 9:30, when most people are long gone from the gym.

And now, more annoyances that feed my conspiracy theory about this place: something about the culture of the University of Michigan does not allow for quiet spaces, I'm convinced of it. I'm in the library right now, designing a flyer for an event tomorrow in a carrel that's in a long line of carrels. Like many of the times I'm here, various people in adjacent carrels are visiting each other and whispering (not quietly) and occasionally bursting into laughter, and in general not even really trying to be quiet. I don't get what it is, but even in places where quiet is the point (especially libraries), someone is always always talking. Or talking on a cell phone. Go outside! Go to a bar or something if you want to gossip! Gah.

I'm done with people for today. Fortunately I don't have to see anyone until class tomorrow. Also, there are minor roommate annoyances happening, but those are so minor I don't even need to mention them. On the happy side, I slept in today and just had mac and cheese with meatballs from Noodles & Co., and my class tomorrow isn't until noon. Back to flyer designing.

I think all schools are like that. It is why grad students get access to grad lounges with locked doors.

Maybe this is just selective memory, but I don't remember this problem at all in undergrad and I used libraries at two different universities regularly. Anyhow, I'm over it and will be doing the rest of my reading at home. :]

That gym incident seriously sounds like advice from one of those horribly mistaken Cosmopolitan-style "How to Get a Guy to Notice You" articles (#5: "Accidentally" use the same weight bench as him. When he says something, giggle coyly and ask him to spot you.) Yeah chick, you'll get noticed all right.

If that's what she was doing it was a total fail because she looked super annoyed.
