Because y'all don't think I'm crazy enough already.

I've been sorting and throwing away receipts for the last couple of days. This is not a process that should take two days, but I have a confession to make, internet: I save receipts, for no good reason. Not just for major purchases or charitable contributions, but for everything. Taken together, this allows me an interesting peek into my life as a consumer, with appropriate lessons to learn, but it is damn inefficient and hopefully I will stop the habit. And the last few times I moved, I just toted boxes of receipts along without even looking through them. Moving to another state of course requires slimming down, so I finally sat down to sort them. 99% of them are now gone, which makes me very happy, and I will soon have the few that I need to keep (medical stuff, clothes I bought this summer that may be returned, cool things I drew on the back of receipts) neatly organized.

I learned two things from this process:

1.) I desperately need to be more efficient when sorting stuff. Yes, I have two weeks left, but if anyone can squander two weeks of packing time, it's the kid that saves all of his receipts and then blogs about the process of throwing them away. Hah.

2.) My money should be spent differently. No, not every dollar I spent is accounted for in here, but a significant portion is (I figure I have most receipts as far back as June 2006, and even found some from 2003!), and it paints a weird picture. I put aside receipts from some of the most common places I ate, for example, and added up how much I spent at each. Yes, this is inefficient and crazy, but indulge me for a minute:

Chipotle = $265.41
Green Tango (a place that sells build-your-own salads) = $154.56
East End Martini Bar (hosts Sunday gay night) = $200.34
Elmo's Diner (my favorite place ever, which is 2 blocks away) = $541.69

Yikes, huh? Now back to the task at hand. I'm going to start listing junk that is perfectly good on Freecycle to speed up the process of emptying out my bedroom.
