Kelis didn't say anything about throwing milkshakes, right?

My DC adventure over the weekend went like this. I took Friday off of work yet still woke up before 8 a.m. on a day off; go me. I took OJ for a quick oil change, ate breakfast, packed, and got my ass on the road by noon. It rained for about the first 3 hours of the drive and I stuffed my face with Wendy's to make it less boring. OJ overheated and died while I was about 1000 yards from my first destination, Ikea. Fortunately it didn't happen while I was on I-95 or I might not be here to tell the story. After cooling off for a while in a Popeye's parking lot, I made it and bought a desk, dresser, and some other assorted crap. There was much more assorted crap I wanted that will have to wait until I have more assorted dollars.

From there I made my way up NoVA a bit while listening to my favorite radio station on Earth, checked into my hotel, and watched CNN in disbelief for a while. Then I hit the gym and had a good run on a very noisy treadmill while watching a random HBO movie about the Russian mafia. There was no sound or closed captioning or remote control in sight so I mostly guessed at what was going on and was probably way off but it was a good 45-minute distraction. There was also a lot of sex and throat-slitting, which was a bit creepy. When I went back upstairs to my room I got to hear the voices of the characters as they saved a baby from being thrown in a river or something! But of course I didn't get the name of the movie.

Anyway, I woke up at 8:30 or so the next day, had free breakfast with awful service, then packed (I managed to spread the contents of my suitcase in every conceivable corner of the room within 16 hours) and started driving up to College Park. On the way someone threw what looked like a styrofoam cup out of their car window and now my car is streaked in milkshake. Yay the Beltway. It turned out to be a fine visit in spite of that and the mad traffic resulting from a home football game. The campus is just fine and I saw the buildings, studios, and library associated with my intended program, and though UMD isn't my number one choice, it's still good to know that it would be fine to be a student there. Also, there are a shit ton of 7-11s in College Park.

Following that Stephen and I spoke by phone and arranged to meet up for a late lunch. I drove to his parents' house and then he drove us in his not-streaked-in-dairy car to the biggest Whole Foods in existence. We caught up while eating all 80 Asian tempeh salads on offer, and I even got a bit of pasta salad despite not being all that into noodles these days because it was coated in pesto, woo. Also, Stephen is going to paint an accent wall in his apartment, and I'm very excited by this. Hah. Following the long lunch he drove me back to my car and I made my way home for Homecoming (seriously). The drive home was less rainy and better for the car because I took breaks at strategic points, and I believe I will write about Homecoming in another entry. And not today.

Ugh... I missed ya. I didn't know you were going to be in the area. I actually work in the college park area!

Are you moving up here?

I'm applying to grad school, and UMD is one of the options. So I might be moving up there in August of '09! Also, I might ask you random questions about DC if I get accepted and get $ from them.
