Good morning, LJ! I blogged my crappy morning for you!

Our (very loud and thus very effective) fire alarm went off at about 4:25 a.m. The last time it went off was also an insanely early morning in winter. I was asleep, so ... I got dressed, got my keys and cell phone and laptop in a confused panic, and got out the door. (I did not, however, get my contact lenses. I never go anywhere without contacts on; it was not so good.) I love my apartment and I like this complex in general, but I hate that someone else could be responsible for burning down all my stuff, and possibly me. If I lived in a house, I'd take every precaution I know of against fire, and if my house burned down anyway, I'd know that at least I'd done what I could.

Anyway, I'm walking away from the loudness as fast as possible. Some dude on the 2nd floor was screaming obscenities, heightening the possibility that this is an actual fire. I sped up the pace (he was just pissed at the situation, apparently). Five minutes pass of standing around with my neighbors and their dogs, not that I could make out the faces of anyone I know (see no contacts thing above). It's 18 degrees, and I'm wearing flip flops (at least I got my coat and scarf). The alarm turns off. People start filing back in. The alarm turns on again. We all turn around and go back out; Really Angry Guy curses some more. One fire truck arrives. The firefighters confer with the maintenance dude who lives here, then go into the building. Another firetruck arrives. The alarm goes off, but they don't let us back in. Firefighters go in armed with maps of our hallways (there are 323 apartments, and not exactly in a straightforward layout either). Finally, they let us back in at about 4:50.

I wish I could go back to sleep, but I'm way too rattled and kind of have a headache, so I've blogged it all for you. Woo. I might cook breakfast now, and eat it with some Advil.

When I lived in the dorms, we were evacuated all the time (read - in the middle of the night in the dead of winter) because some ass hat had burned a bag of popcorn somewhere in the building. One evening we were evacuated and quite quickly took note of the smoke pouring out of the 3rd floor. Another ass hat fell asleep while smoking a certain illegal substance and lit the sofa on fire. They ended up pumping the whole building full of water...everything I owned was smoke and/or water damaged...and we weren't allowed back in until the next day. Ahhh...good times.

Oh, and now that I have my own house my father (the volunteer firefighter) has made sure that I take every precaution known to man. :-)

Yeah, I remember all the dorm fire drills as well. Thankfully there were never any real fires! I'm not sure what happened this time; it appeared to be either an alarm malfunction or a small fire ... probably not someone just pulling the alarm to celebrate the outcome of the Iowa caucuses, as someone suggested. ;)

Two days into my freshman year, we were evacuated from our dorm around 3am. When I got outside, I finally woke up a bit and realized that I hadn't put on anything besides my boxers, and everyone else was dressed. It was an awkward 30 minutes.

Oops. Well, at least it was August. Had I been there, I would have been eyeing you salaciously.
